Timeless Design for a Visionary Artist

Raqib Shaw (b. 1974, Kolkata / London) is celebrated for his richly detailed, jewel-infused paintings and sculptures that channel mythology, art history, poetry, and decorative arts. His work teems with fantastical flora and fauna, layered symbolism, and references spanning Eastern and Western traditions. 

For his new website, I partnered directly with his studio manager to migrate Shaw’s entire archive — exhibitions, publications, artworks, images — tracing back to 2005. I ensured every record, image, label, and catalogue sheet was carefully transferred and matched to metadata.

Working within Artlogic and coordinating with the site’s build, I also advised on the typographic choices and clean visual structure to support Shaw’s intensely intricate imagery. The brief demanded a balance: the design must be crisp and minimal so it doesn’t compete with the art, yet elegant enough to reflect the richness of his vision.

The result is a site where each work breathes, the details remain intact at deep zoom, and the overall flow feels restrained and dignified.
